DepEd to strengthen student entrepreneurship with IT

The Department of Education has integrated a course on ICT to help students who poised to embark on business ventures. Under the Student Technologists and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines (STEP) skills development program, students are taught the knowledge and skills to create websites which can be used in marketing products and services, among others. RP e-Library project faces possibility of being shutdown

The e-library project might be shut down, as the project fails to obtain the P67 million additional funding needed to sustain the portal. The e-library currently has 800,000 bibliographic records of both local and international materials; 15,000 theses and dissertations and 29,000 foreign journals, among others. K-Agrinet IT program to get second wind

After its successful three-month caravan, the K-Agrinet (Knowledge Networking Towards Enterprising Agricultural Communities) project is scheduled to have a second tour, this time with a new set of courseware on forestry and rice farming. The Deaprtment of Education is encouraging policy makers, academicians and IT experts to contribute to DepEd's planning and strategizing activity by submitting abstracts for the Second Basic National ICTs in Basic Education Congress. DepEd, CICT tie-up for summer ICT training for teachers

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) are currently training 400 public elementary school teachers in the use of ICTs for the creation of lesson plans, class schedules, grading systems and teaching. Each of the 40 schools represented by the participants will receive 20 computers and one server, all sourced out of the E-Government Fund.

IT skills training enlisted in fight vs human trafficking

As part of its Unlimited Potential project, Microsoft Philippines aims to train survivors of human trafficking as a means of helping them find livelihood as they recover from their ordeals. For this endeavor, Microsoft partnered with the Visayan Forum Foundation, an NGO which has been conducting research on and has set up half-way houses to shelter survivors of human trafficking. IT industry gets bigger share of P500M scholarship program

Almost half of the opportunities within the government's "Training for Work Scholarship Program," is said to be bound for IT workers. Speaheaded by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the program intends to supplement the needs of newly-hired personnel in the bureaucracy. Webmasters’ interface on accessible ICT for PWDs, set

In an effort to bring ICTs closer to people with disabilities (PWDs), the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP) together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is scheduling a workshop that will gather webmasters across the country. “Webmasters’ Interface on Accessible ICT for Persons with Disabilities” is slated on May 24-26 in Cebu City.
