Gov't aims to save P170M a year with VoIP--NEDA exec

The government is eying the deployment of voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) to cut down it communications cost. In 2004 the government spent P649.8 million for fixed lines, mobile phones, Internet connectivity and others. The use of VOIP is expected to generate savings of up P170 million. Digitel pulls out complaint vs. Smart on voice charges

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) reported that Digitel pulled out its complaint against Smart Communications after the two operators agreed on the reduced access charges for voice services between their networks. House approves VoIP deregulation bill

The House of Representatives has approved the consolidated bill which seeks to deploy voice over Internet protocol as value-added service. Aside from strengthening the position of the National Telecommunications Commission on VOIP, this development is also expected to mainstream the technology within the government. Solons mull tax on text messaging anew to replace taxes on oil

Solons are considering the imposition of a P0.50 centavo tax on text messages to replace the value added tax (VAT) on petroleum products and power services. New CICT Secretary see VoIP use in gov't, centralize systems

Recently appointed Chair of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Ramon Sales has partially outlined his plans for the CICT. Among these are the use of voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) in the government; the transformation of the Telecommunications Office (Telof) into a manager of all the government's telecommunications network and stremline the agencies under CICT.
