Next billion mobile users seen to come from emerging markets

As the Asia Pacific region is home to 37 percent of the world's subscribers to mobile phone technology including 3G or third generation technology, the next billion users are expected to emerge from the African continent and Russia and other places where potential subscribers are willing to pay only $30 for a handset. During the 3G World Congress and Exhibit, telecommunications providers and technology developers affirmed that despite the hype around new technologies such as 3G, the market for basic wireless voice service remains huge. Mobile phone subscribers world wide now numbers P2 billion.

Worldwide chip sales to grow 45% by 2008--industry

The Semiconductor Industry Association reported that chip sales are expected to grow by as much as 45 percent from 2004 to 2008 or from $213 billion in 2004 to $309 billion in 2008. It further said that as demand for semiconductors from the IT industry will continue, consumer products such as MP3 players will most likely be the the major growth driver in the next few years. SIA forecasts sales amounting to $227.6 billion by the end of 2005.

Internet phone calls on the rise

Market research firm Gartner said that by 2009, 70% of voice connections aound the world will be facilitated by broadband technology, given the decreasing cost of mobile phones which may cost as little as £14 by 2010. Gartner said that such trend can be both positive and negative to telecommunications companies whose cost are brought as they upgrade their networks but may not be able to generate as much as cash.

RP ranks 2nd in Asia cable TV piracy list

The Cable and Sattelite Broadcasting Association of the Philippines (CASBAA) said that illegal cable connections have led the country to rank second in pay-TV piracy in the Asian region. Losses from the illegal activity have increased from P4 billion in 2004 to more than P5 billion in 2005.

RP telco industry posts $4.7M in 2004 revenues: IDC

The International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that the Philippine telecommunications industry generated an estimated revenue of US$4.7 million in 2004, 14% higher than the previous year. The mobile phone operators remain the main drivers as they contributed 69% of the total amount. This can be attributed to the 47% increase of mobile phone subscribers to 32.7 million from 22.3 million in 2003. IPC expects the industry to maintain the US$4.7 million level in the next few years, adding that data services can potentially enhance the growth of the fixed line business especially with the availability of voice over Internet protocol (VOIP).

IT spending in RP to hit $1.2B-- IDC

RP’s ‘tech force’ to hit 207,000 by year-end

Through its survey, Virginia-based Information Technology Association of America reported that the Filipino workforce in ICT may expand by one third to 207,000 by the end of 2005. Among the motivators for this trend is said to be the increasing number of call centers, data transcription firms and other related offices that are being established in the country. As of December 2004, around 160,000 Filipinos are employed in ICT industry.




Call center investments total P6.3B in ‘04 - DTI

Call centers contributed almost 80% of the total investments in ICT in 2004. The ICT sector registered P8.07 billion, employing 27,732 workers. Call centers currently employs 67,000 Filipinos.
