4th version of Bayanihan Linux OS to be launched soon

The Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) is set to release a fourth version of Bayanihan Linux. Based on Debian, this latest version is said to have more advanced features for local networking; virus protection; CD and DVD burning; and other multi-media tasks. Microsoft reaches out to open source community with ‘Port25’

Three New Open Source Centres of Excellence in Asia and the Pacific Region

The International Open Source Network (IOSN) has selected the University of the Philippines-Manila as its node in region covered by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations + 3. UPM, together with other two other centers of excellence in other regions in Asia, is expected to lead the research and development, training and networking activities which will promote the adoption of free and open source software. UPM was part of BUKAS, the NGO consortium behind the Public Interest and Advocacy Track in Linux World Philippines 2005. Ubuntu's Shuttleworth visits Manila

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth made a short visit to the Philippines as part of his Asian tour. Despite the limited time, a dialogue between Shuttleworth and civil society advocates of FOSS pushed nonetheless through on the afternoon of February 2, 2006 at the National Computer Center (NCC). The meeting was organized by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) and Canonical, promoter of Ubuntu.

This fifth APDIP e-Note introduces readers to what a community or practice is and describes how one community of practice (CoP), the International Open Source Network (IOSN), builds a participatory, sustainable and ever-expanding CoP in an online environment. IOSN is focused on promoting the strategic use of free/open source software (FOSS) solutions for sustainable human development. This APDIP e-Note explores how IOSN: (i) expands its network to promote FOSS solutions using electronic mailing lists and really simple syndication (RSS) feeds; (ii) encourages members to participate in the community through blogs, forums, polls and wikis; and (iii) develops a culture of sharing among members. Web cafes gripe on computer software

After being the subject of an anti-piracy campaign, Internet cafe owners said that the authorities should first check their own backyards and determine whether government offices indeed use licensed software. GMA makes surprise pitch for Microsoft's 'Bintana'

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo surprised everyone during the 10th anniversary celebration of Microsoft Philippines as she announced “Bintana”, a low-cost and localized version of Windows. Though the program was not known even by Microsoft's staff, the company's managing director Antonio “TJ” Javier said that the program is actually in the pipeline. He added that the company will be contracting the service of National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario to translate certain computer terminologies into Tagalog. (By Melvin G.
