Gov't aims to save P170M a year with VoIP--NEDA exec

The government is eying the deployment of voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) to cut down it communications cost. In 2004 the government spent P649.8 million for fixed lines, mobile phones, Internet connectivity and others. The use of VOIP is expected to generate savings of up P170 million. Low-tech judges could be fired for 'gross ignorance'

The Supreme Court is not only determined to tap ICTs but it is preparing its judges and other officials for the SC's modernization. Training sessions are currently being organized to help judges maximize the e-library portal which includes various laws and legal decisions. CSC gets $500,000 grant for e-governance project

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) had provided the Civil Service Commission (CSC) a half-million dollar grant to develop a civil service database system that will result in a more rational, transparent and cost-efficient decision-making process, especially with regards to hiring and career movements of civil servants. Congress allocates P190M for modernization

CICT asks for more time to resolve 'overlaps' in mandate

Senate defers passage of poll automation bill

The Senate failed to pass the poll automation bill before its five-week long Lenten recess. Principal author Senator Richard Gordon claims that this bill which aims to safeguard such processes in the future will be the remedy to the aborted automation of the 2004 elections. Budget cut puts unified ID system project on hold

The unified identification system which the administration is aggressively pushing has been shelved after the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) reallocated the P200 million to other ongoing government projects. Proposals for partial automation of 2007 polls pushed

Solons from both the Senate and the House of Representatives have filed a bill that seeks to amend the existing election law and automate at least 20 percent of the precincts during the 2007 elections. The Department of Education (DepEd) has set up a mobile phone hotline which parents and students may use to convey their grievances against public school teachers. Child abuse cases may now be reported by simply texting DEPED FDBK and sending the complaint to 2622. (By Alex Villafania, Inq7.net)

Philippines moves down in global IT ranking--WEF

The latest World Economic Forum (WEF) through its Global Information Technology report has ranked the Philippines three notches lower, from 67th place in 2004 to 70th place in 2005. The Report uses the Networked Readiness Index that looks into three major areas: the environment for ICT offered by a given country or community; the readiness of the community's key stakeholders - individuals, business and governments and the usage of ICT among these stakeholders.
